Canuck is a curious word. Its origin is uncertain, possibly tied to “kanata” (the Huron-Iroquois word for village and the origin of Canada’s name), and it was first recorded as “Kanuck” in 1835 to describe Dutch or French Canadians. It began as outsider slang and was sometimes used dismissively, but like many national nicknames it was eventually absorbed by culture. Today, “Canuck” is a widely used and often affectionate term for Canadians.
