“Eh” is a one-syllable wonder. Canadians use it to invite agreement, check understanding, or soften what they’re saying. “Nice day, eh?” can confirm an observation, ask a question, or simply keep a conversation going. Linguists classify several uses, from confirming facts to softening requests. “It’s cold, eh?” differs from “Help me carry this, eh?”, but both rely on shared understanding. Often mocked outside the country, “eh” remains a clear marker of Canadian identity.
