Whether playing a smarmy television host like Johnny LaRue, a well-meaning uncle, or an optimistic polka king, John Candy’s characters often reflected distinctly Canadian qualities: humility, self-deprecation, and decency. Though his career took him to the United States, his loyalty to Canada remained visible through his investment in the Toronto Argonauts, support for Canadian productions, and introduction of the Canadian kids’ channel YTV during its inaugural broadcast.
