From Day 74 of my Drawn To Canada series.

In popular culture, a white cowboy hat symbolizes virtue, heroism, and good character. In Canada, that symbol takes a regional form through Calgary’s white cowboy hat. Introduced in 1946 by Morris Shumiatcher, a Russian-Jewish immigrant and founder of Smithbilt Hats, it was designed to promote Western hospitality and the Calgary Stampede. Calgary later formalized the tradition by presenting white hats to visiting dignitaries, an honour often compared to receiving the keys to the city.
