Crokinole originated in 19th-century Ontario and has since become a cherished part of Canadian identity. The oldest known board was made in 1876 by immigrant Eckhardt Wettlaufer in Perth County, Ontario, as a birthday gift for his son. It is a tabletop game with elements of shuffleboard and curling scaled down to kitchen-table size. Crokinole became a winter pastime, a Sunday diversion, and a family ritual. Its appeal lies in its dual identity: as a game shaped by immigrants and as a tradition that has become distinctly Canadian through generations of play.
